August Newsletter

President’s Letter
     Now, that was some hot and humid July! LOWA’s 4th of July celebration on July 6 started our month on an uncomfortable note. But the fun and festivities were worth the heated soggy air.
As we approach the later part of the year more exciting events are in store for us. Repeating some items already discussed: the NCL cruise to Bermuda in September/October, the train rides in West Virginia in October and the exciting stay at Greenbrier Resort in December round out our 2013 trips.
     The speaker in July certainly was informative, especially re: the small TV-like device enabling those with hearing impairment to be better communicated with and communicate back. We may see a demo of that “free” system at a future meeting.Our August speaker will be presenting Dr. Suess for Adults. We all remember The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. Reading Dr. Suess books to our kids and grandkids was always a pleasure for all.
     Reading to children opens their vistas to the world we all live in. When my brother was in kindergarten, his teacher asked him one day, “What are you drawing, Martin?” He replied, “I’m drawing God, teacher.” Teacher said, “But no one knows what God looks like.” Without looking up from his work, Martin replied, “They will in a minute.”
     My call for new volunteers hopefully has garnered activity in terms of stepping forward and giving some time to our various activity leaders, such as the following who are recent steppers-uppers: Ann Wood, Tony Quattromani, Nell Meador, Charlotte Baker. et al. Let’s keep the Chapter vibrant with more folks pitching in. Speaking of pitching in, the Annual Food Drive is scheduled for September 7. Kathi Martin will be giving out more data about the event at our August meeting. Let’s all help those in need.See you all on 19 August.
Dick Bradie, President

Dr. Seuss for Grownups at August Meeting!
by Charlotte Baker, Publicity
Come spend a morning with Theodor Geisell. He's famous for his words, his rhyme, his outrageous illustrations, and his fun!  He's not so famous for his politics, his shyness, and his obsessive work ethic.
At the Monday, August 19 meeting of the AARP, Madeline Salustri, retired educator, will share a glimpse into the lifework of the legendary author Geisell, better known to the world as Dr. Seuss. This is a Seussical for Grown Ups.
Madeline and husband Alex are "new" LOW residents who feel blessed to be enjoying their second and final retirement in the Lake of the Woods community. After over a quarter of a century working for the New York State education department as teacher and administrator, Madeline spent twenty years of her first retirement performing in Connecticut regional theater as actress, dramatic reader, and lecturer. She also taught many language arts classes -- including creative writing and public speaking -- for the Milford, Connecticut, Fine Arts Council.
Attendees, who wish to use a handicapped parking place at the Clubhouse and find they are all occupied, may park near the Fitness Center and take advantage of a volunteer shuttle service from there to and from the Clubhouse front door. Contact Larry Ervin at 972-0652 or Dick Bradie at 308-5507 if you would like to use the service.

AARP Day of Service September 19, 2013
Bob Johnson, Volunteer Coordinator
Thursday, September 19, 2013 is our “Volunteer Service Day.” First, thanks to all of you who volunteered over the past few years. You have made a big, positive impact on our community; not to mention awards for our President and this club among other Virginia AARP clubs!
Our goal is 10% of our membership. Consider giving anywhere from two to six hours of your life to help with the project.
As in the past, we will organize projects at:
   *  Nursing homes (assist residents to attend social activities, read to, write letters for, or just visit with the residents).
   *  Orange County Historical Society
   *  Orange County Humane Society
   *  Wilderness Exhibition Shelter (clean up the yard around the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) building yard, etc.)
I need someone to coordinate each project. If you work with any organization, ask them what we could do for them with a team of 4-10 people. Call me with the information.
I will have sign-up sheets at the August 19 and September 16t meeting. If you can’t make the meetings, let me know if you can help at 972 4358 or email bjohn913@comcast.net. Thanks.

Volunteers Needed
As in any organization, there are the folks who take on jobs to keep the organization healthy and active. There are Chapters in VA that are having trouble staying active at all. Our Chapter has the benefit of a huge population, thereby yielding a cadre of folks to take on volunteer positions. But many of those folks, having held those slots for years, need a rest and a chance to sit back and advise. Few tasks within our Chapter take more than a couple of hours a week to achieve success. Some take longer efforts, but each one has their own rewards.
This missive is a call to folks to step up and pitch in, help, learn, and contribute to the well-being of Locust Grove Chapter 5239. No chastisement is meant or implied here, but let’s see some new blood (figuratively speaking) working with incumbents with the eventual goal of managing a task.
See Dick Bradie or Tony Aris or any officer or BOD member to get more info. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Chicken BBQ Tickets Coming in September
   Election Day Chicken BBQ tickets will be mailed out at the same time as the September newsletter, but in a separate envelope.  Please note that the tickets will be at the bottom of the letter.

Moves for the Month
by Sandie Frame
*  Sit Down Strengtheners
Almost everyone can do these exercises but these are especially valuable if you are limited in mobility.  Take 10 – 15 minutes going through the following seated exercises, and you may find yourself with improved flexibility, blood flow, and state of mind. Do these in a sturdy chair, preferably on a non-skid surface.

Chest expander
    Bend your back against the chair and expand your chest upward while straightening your arms down at your side. Then bed your upper body forward. Do three repetitions.
    *  Side tilt: Tilt your upper body as far as possible to the left until you can feel a slight stretch at your opposite side. Return to center, then tilt to the right. Return to center and repeat. Do three repetitions.
*  Knee raises:  Raise one knee towards your chest while lifting your foot off the floor; hold for three seconds. Lower your leg and do the same on the other side. Do five repetitions.
*  Knee Straighteners: Straighten your left leg; hold for three seconds then lower it to the floor and relax. Do the same with your right leg. Do five repetitions.
