December Newsletter

 President’s Letter

Well, I guess all good things come to an end. The two years that I have served as your President have been a truly exciting and enjoyable experi-ence for me, and I hope for all of you also. We have seen many events, activities, programs, trips and just plain fun, with little or no pain. Let me list some of the activities that make our members glad to be involved and what the past two years have meant for our Chapter.

-Our Food pantry Drives were a big success.

-Volunteer Days did much for our Community here in the Lake and around Orange County.

-Vin Etching was conducted to thwart auto theft.

-Entertaining/informative speakers kept us laughing, thoughtful and educated.

-Local day trips, train rides, cruises, beach stay, and deep south excursions kept us hopping.

-Election Day Chicken BBQ successes that brought many dollars into the chapter.

I could go on and on and also name all those responsible for our enjoyment and elucidation. That would take many pages. Let me summarize by saying THANK YOU to all who served-the Officers, Directors, Committee Chair people, and the rank and file who gave their support for our many doings.

When it’s time to say adieu, it’s best to say it with a smile and a chuckle.

You all know that I really have a brother. Now, for the rest of the story.

My brother and I were sitting in a park a short time ago. I turned to Martin and said “I’m 77 years old and full of aches and pains. You’re older than I am. How do you feel?” My brother replied “I feel just like a new-born baby.” “Really,” I said, “like a baby?” “Yes,” Martin said, “no hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet myself.”

AARP to Celebrate with Potluck

It’s almost here! A favorite meeting for everyone, the AARP Christmas Pot Luck Luncheon will be held on Monday, December 16, at the Community Center. We are pleased that Millie Wieser, President of the Culpeper AARP Chapter, has agreed to officiate at the swearing-in of next year’s officers.
Of course, we all look forward to sampling everyone’s favorite dish. Unless you always provide Grandma’s special-recipe casserole, those whose name begins with A through M are asked to contribute a main or side dish; those whose names are between N and Z are asked to bring a dessert.
The festivities begin at 11:30 AM.  Please bring your food and help with setup between 11 and 11:30 PM. Everyone is welcome to join us on December 16!

Silent Auction
In a small southern town there was a “Nativity Scene” that showed great skill and talent had gone into creating it. One small feature bothered me.
The three wise men were wearing firemen's helmets. Totally unable to come up with a reason or explanation, I left.
At a “Quik Stop” on the edge of town, I asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets.
She exploded into a rage, yelling at me, “You stupid Yankees never do read the Bible!” I assured her that I did, but simply couldn't recall anything about firemen in the Bible.

She jerked her Bible from behind the counter and ruffled through some pages, and finally jabbed her finger at a passage. Sticking it in my face she said “See, it says right here, 'The three wise men came from afar.’”

There will not be a silent auction at the December meeting. New organizers will be needed for 2014. Contact Tony Aris if you are interested in volunteering.

More Information on Medicare and the Health Insurance Exchange (the Marketplace):
Most important to note – Medicare is NOT part of the Marketplace. If you are covered by Medicare you cannot buy additional insurance from the Marketplace. You may buy additional insurance such as a Medigap plan or an Advantage Plan, but you can only buy such plans from private insurers. Your Medicare plan, as well as Tricare plans meets the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.
The bottom line is:
If you are presently covered by Medicare, you do not need to do anything.

Colonoscopy Still Tops for Preventing Colorectal Cancer
by Sandie Frame, Medical Issues
While there are other screening tests that are less burdensome a physician with the Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Colorectal Surgery states “you could say that any screening is better than none. The one advantage that colonoscopy has is it’s the only test that is preventive as well as diagnostic.” Since Medicare covers a yearly fecal test (bottom option) we should avail ourselves of this test; however, a colonoscopy is still considered the most definitive test and if you have not had one please consider it.
Colorectal Screening Options
Colonoscopy (Every 10 yrs.)
  - Typically allows exam of entire colon;
  -  Can remove polyps or biopsy suspicious tissue
  - Intensive bowel prep; requires sedation;
  - Small risk of bleeding or bowel perforation
       Medicare covers once every 10 years for average- risk patients, every two years for high-risk patients,
       or four years after flexible sigmoidoscopy.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy (Every 5 yrs.)
  -  Less intensive bowel prep.; no sedation necessary;
  -  Can identify polyps.
  -  May cause discomfort; risk of missing polyps because only 1/3 of colon examined;
  - Very small risk of bleeding or bowel perforation
  - Colonoscopy is required for abnormal findings.
       Medicare covers test every four years, but not within10 years of a previous colonoscopy.
CT Colonography (Every 5 yrs. )
  - Typically allows exam of entire colon, mostly non Invasive;
  -  No sedation necessary; can ID polyps
  - Intensive bowel prep; may miss small polyps;
  - Air used to inflate colon may cause discomfort;
  - colposcopy required to remove polyps or for other abnormal findings.
        Medicare: No coverage offered                                                                                                           Fecal Immuno-Chemical Test  (Yearly)
    - No bowel preparation, no dietary restrictions no risk of bowel injury;
    - Sensitive to colorectal cancer.
    - Does not detect polyps, small rate of false positive results
    - Colonoscopy required for abnormal findings.
          Medicare covers annual testing

November Newsletter

President’s Letter

As my two-year term as your President nears its end, I find us going into the busiest time of the year. Election Day, Chicken BBQ, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas keep us hopping for the last two months of the year.

Our chapter has seen many accomplishments by our membership: Volunteer Day, Vin Etching, Shredder Event, Food Pantry collection success, awesome trips (train rides, cruise, day trips in the area, Greenbrier soon). Without the help and work of many of our members, these things do not happen. Our Program folks have treated us to humorous, exciting, and informational speakers. Tours and Travel are most likely the best T&T of any chapter in our state and beyond. To name everyone who has been so critical to our success as “Chapter of the Year” again would take pages and pages. Let me just say, “THANK YOU!,” to all.

This is not my final statement. I get one more chance to regale you with my wit (sometimes half-wit) writings and stories.

Well, I hope to see you all at the luncheon. Bring friends/neighbors and those who are not members of our wonderful Chapter. The Christmas Luncheon would be an excellent venue for potential new members to see the benefits of joining our group. Attendees do not have to be members, and all they need for entry is a dish of scrumptious food (which is another benefit of our Chapter ~ good food).

A little tale about my brother: He volunteers in Nursing Homes to entertain the patients. One time he took his portable keyboard along and sang some funny songs at the patients’ bedsides. As he finished and was leaving, he called out, "I hope you get better." One elderly man retorted "I hope you get better, too."
See you on the 18th of November.
Dick Bradie, President

Dogwood Village Featured in November
by Charlotte Baker, Publicity
We know Dogwood Village as one of Orange County’s premier resources for health care. Some Lake of the Woods residents have used their services, and some are volunteers there. Now is our chance to learn more about what it offers. Patty Talley, Amanda Settle and Rita Johnson will each discuss various aspects of the facility and its capabilities at the November 18 meeting at the Clubhouse.
Begun in 1970, Dogwood Village has recently expanded and now offers assisted living in addition to
inpatient health and rehabilitation and outpatient rehab services. Since it is owned by the County of Orange, operations of the non-profit facility are overseen by the Health Center Commission of Orange County, members of which are appointed by the Board of Supervisors.
 Come to the Clubhouse at 9:30 AM for coffee and sweets and the opportunity to chat with old and new friends.  The meeting begins at 10 AM.

Day of Service Report

The week of September 16-20 was our “Day of Service” week. While participation was down this year, we had 22 members work for TRIAD, National Park Service-Wilderness Battlefield, Food Bank, and the Orange County Historical Society. They performed 102 hours of community service.
Many thanks for all who participated. Remember when you participate in community service; be sure to register your hours at the meetings. Each year our members provide hundreds more hours serving our community.

Silent Auction: Dust Off Those Christmas Tree Ornaments
by Karen Kovarik, Silent Auction
The time has come to clean out your closets of forgotten ornaments, and Christmas togs you have
out-grown. Perhaps another member can use them to brighten up their holidays?
In the past we have not encouraged the donation of clothing since we could not adequately display garments. But, thanks to Gil Churchill we now have a suitable rack. It would be helpful if you also bring a hanger when you donate a new or gently used garment so we can show it off.
For pick up, please phone Karen (7866), or Mary (8042).

 AARP Safe Driving Course
The LOW Lions are sponsoring AARP’s Driver Safety Course Wednesday, December 4, and Thursday, December 5, from 9 AM – 1PM in the Community Center. Exercises to improve postural awareness
by Sandie Frame
Shoulder retractions: This exercise engages postural muscles. Hold a resistance band (or a thick piece of elastic) in both hands, arms bent with hands toward the front, keeping your elbows against your sides. Squeeze your shoulder blades together as you rotate your arms away from your body while keeping your elbows against your sides. Hold for one or two seconds, then return to the starting position. Do 15 repetitions three to five times daily.
Chest stretch: This exercise helps posture by stretching your chest muscles so you are less likely to be in a hunched-over position. Stand by a door frame with one foot in front of the other. Place your forearm against the door frame while keeping your elbow bent at 90 degrees. Gently rotate your upper body away from the arm until you feel a stretch in your chest muscles. Do not let your shoulder move forward as you rotate. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds. Reverse sides. Do the stretch three to five times daily.

Legislative News for November 2013
by Tony Quattromani
With all the news and talk about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), it is easy to lose track of Medicare.
If you currently have a Medicare Plan, you have the opportunity to change your plan during the open enrollment, which lasts through December. Medicare Open enrollment is the time to compare your current Medicare plan with all of your Medicare options for 2014. Compare your options carefully, and you may find better coverage, higher quality or lower cost. Also, you should keep in mind that Medicare recipients are now eligible for a number of free preventative benefits (when you use qualified and Medicare participating physicians or providers).

Information, tools for comparing plans and more detailed information are available at www.medicare.gov. This website is not the same as the healthcare site in the news. If you do not have internet access, you may call 1-800-MEDICARE.

October 2013 Newsletter

President’s Letter

Wow! What happened? We went from Summer to Winter and I either forgot Fall or it didn’t happen. Be that as it may, let’s look forward to October with good weather and anticipation for November: Veterans’ Day and Thanksgiving. But don’t leave October yet. Why, you say? Because BOO!! The witches and goblins will be out for Halloween. Let’s be careful on the dark and moonlit nights for the tykes in their costumes.

This part of the year is also prime time for the scammers: “We’ve got some driveway sealer left from your neighbors’ driveway, (BS) and we’ll do yours for a good deal.” You will get some detritus or other worthless material and not a “good deal.” Another type of scam is one where Medicare (uh-uh) calls and says, “With the new Health Care Act you need to sign up in the Health Exchange.” Baloney. # 1, Medicare wouldn’t call anyone and 2, Medicare will not be effected for those already enrolled.

So be careful. Pay attention to what our September speaker told us about fires and falls in the home for senior. Check those Smoke Detectors and don’t climb shaky ladders.

Okay, I’m finished preaching. Start thinking of those delicious BBQ Chicken lunches/dinners that will be available on Election Day on November 5th. Pass the word to friends and neighbors re: BBQ CHICKEN. Not only do you get a good tasting Chicken (1/2) but there are baked beans, coleslaw, and brownies, plus any profit the Chapter reaps goes into our donation bin towards the end of the year. There are lots of folks out there who benefit from our largesse.

Our speaker coming up will talk about Alzheimer’s, its appearance, effects on the individual and their loved ones. Hope to see all of you on October 21 for a very important and critical treatise on this subject.

Speaking of memory and confusion issues, my brother was recently driving on Route 95 when his wife called. She said, “Be careful, Martin, I just heard there is a car going the wrong way on 95.” He replied “Heck, it’s not just one, there are dozens of them!”

 Alzheimer’s Highlighted by AARP
by Charlotte Baker, Publicity
Have you signed up for the October 19 “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” ® in Culpeper or pledged to support one of the participants? Mary Pat Hanson hopes the answer is, “Yes.” She will be discussing this health issue at the October 21 AARP meeting. Mary Pat is the Walk Director for the Central and Western Virginia Alzheimer’s Association. She plays a key role in the Walk, the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
Mary Pat, like many of our residents and friends, knows Alzheimer’s not only from the research available but also from the experience of having been a caregiver. She will discuss the ten signs of Alzheimer’s, and emphasize the importance of early detection.
Come to the Clubhouse at 9:30 AM for coffee and sweets and the opportunity to chat with old and new friends. The meeting begins at 10 AM. Everyone is welcome.

BBQ Volunteers Still Needed
by Gil Churchill, BBQ Coordinator
Advertising and ticket sales are moving along for our largest fundraiser of the year. To make this event work, we need all hands on deck. The committee could use 10 more brownie bakers, four people on the serving line, six people on the grills, and a two-person clean-up crew the day after the BBQ. The more we net on this event, the more donations we can give to charity. Please help where you can.
To volunteer contact Gil l at 972-7452 or glchur@comcast.net

by Karen Kovarik, Silent Auction
AARP will participate in the Community yard sale on Saturday, October 12 at the Community Center, but we need your forgotten treasures. Surely some of your vacation purchases were a mistake? Or, have you Halloween goodies stored away? (No, not last year’s candy.)
We do hope that the lovely crystal items you have donated in the past, and some of the Christmas items we have stockpiled will find a good home. But, the more we have to offer, the more AARP stands to make for our charities.
Phone Mary Hudak at 972-8042 or Karen at 972-7866 for pick up, or to arrange a delivery. We will also be in business at the regular AARP meeting on October 21.
All of the funds raised are donated to local charities, such as the Wilderness Food Bank and the Humane Society.

Calcium Study in Women
by Sandie Frame
If you are a woman who takes a calcium supplement and is concerned about its safety, here is reassuring news. A large new Canadian study has linked them to reduced mortality rates. In recent years several studies suggested that calcium supplements increase the risk of heart disease, though this link has been much debated. In contrast, the new observational study in the Journal of Clinical and Endocrinology and Metabolism, found that women who took up to 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day had an 22 percent lower death rate over a ten year period than nonusers; factors such as age, weight, and medical conditions were controlled for.
There was no statistically significant effect on mortality rates in men, with higher doses of calcium or from Vitamin D.

September 2013 Newletter

President’s Letter
Is the hot sticky weather gone for this year? Probably not, but with the crazy weather we have been experiencing, anything could happen. Maybe snow on Labor Day? No, that’s too crazy. But as we progress into the latter third of 2013, the excitement starts to build. The leaves will fall, there will be a nip in the air in the mornings and evenings, and darkness will sooner be upon us with the coming time change.
We start this period with Labor Day, our Annual LOWA Meeting and Awards Presentations on September 2. The gaiety continues with the soon-to-be Holiday Season. The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, is early this year, coming next week, followed by Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Shortly after that we celebrate Halloween with witches and ghosts for the youth of LOW. Veterans’ Day in November is a day of reflecting and honoring of all those who have served in our Armed Forces in peace and war. Then, before you know it, the sound of gobble, gobble is lessened and the sound of families and friends getting together to party, share memories, and munch on Tom Turkey is heard.
Wow, turn around and it’s Hanukah, Kwanza, and Christmas, the most joyous time of the year. Families/friends/neighbors gather to celebrate their beliefs, and hopefully include those less fortunate than we are, and bow our heads to our respective Holy rituals.
Before these events and ceremonies take place, however, our excellent Programs Committee will have another interesting and informative presenter. Our August speaker gave us a wonderful presentation re: Dr. Theodore Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Suess. We laughed and cried as memories came flooding back of the reading that we did for our kids and grandkids. In September, Tom Joyce with the OC F&R, will educate us on the subject of accidents in the home and their prevention.
Speaking about accidents in the home, my brother lives in a multi-story home. Last week he fell down the steps and was taken to the hospital. The doctor asked, “How many steps did you fall down?” My brother replied, “I don’t know, I didn’t bother to count on my way down.”
See you on September 16 for our next meeting.
       Dick Bradie, President

OC Fire and EMS ‘Has Our Backs’
by Charlotte Baker, Publicity
We don’t anticipate a fire or medical emergency, but the Orange County Fire and Emergency Medical Service personnel do. They are the ones who respond to, approximately 5,500 emergency 911 calls each year.
Tom Joyce, Assistant Chief of Orange County’s Department of Fire and EMS, will be the speaker at the AARP meeting on September 16. He has served Orange County’s 34,000 residents for nine years, and has been in the fire and rescue field for nearly 30. He’ll speak primarily on preventing fires and falls for LOW’s residents, but we know his work has covered a myriad of unexpected situations. We look forward to benefiting from that experience.
Come to the Clubhouse at 9:30 AM for coffee and sweets and the opportunity to chat with old and new friends. The meeting begins at 10 PM. Everyone is welcome.

September 19 Day of Service
by Bob Johnson, Volunteer Coordinator
Thursday, September 19, 2013, is our “Volunteer Service Day.” First, thanks to all of you who volunteered over the past few years. You have made a big, positive impact on our community; not to mention awards for our President and this club among other Virginia AARP clubs!
Our goal is to involve 10% of our membership as volunteers. Consider giving anywhere from two to six hours of your life to help with the project.
As in the past, we will have projects at:
    *  Dogwood Village (Orange County Nursing Homes)—attend social activities, read to, write letters for, or just visit with the residents).
    * Orange County Historical Society—some outside work.
*  Orange County Humane Society
*  Wilderness Food Pantry
*  Wilderness Exhibition Shelter (clean up the yard around the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) building yard, etc.)
I need someone to coordinate each project. If you work with any organization, ask them what we could do for them with a team of 4-10 people. Call me with the information.
I will have sign-up sheets at the September 16 meeting. If you cannot make the meeting, let me know if you can help at 972 4358 or email bjohn913@comcast.net. Thanks.

Keeping it safe
by Sandie Frame
The safety of your food depends on many factors, including how the food was grown, handled, processed, and stored. But shopping strategies and how you handle the food at home are also important. Here’s how to keep your groceries safe.
   *  If food shopping is one of a number of errands, make it the last, especially if you will be buying perishables and the weather is warm.
   *  Pay attention to “sell by” and “use by” or other freshness dates on packaged perishable products.
   *  Pick up refrigerated and frozen foods last, so they are more likely to stay cold until you get home.
   *  At the checkout, bag refrigerated perishables together and raw meats separately. Bag frozen foods separately, and put them in your car last, next to the refrigerated perishables. They will keep each other cool, and they will be the first things you take out of the car when you get home. In hot weather or, if you have a long drive home, bring some insulated bags or a cooler with ice packs to keep things chilled.
