President’s
Letter
Is the hot sticky weather gone for
this year? Probably not, but with the crazy weather we have been experiencing,
anything could happen. Maybe snow on Labor Day? No, that’s too crazy. But as we
progress into the latter third of 2013, the excitement starts to build. The
leaves will fall, there will be a nip in the air in the mornings and evenings,
and darkness will sooner be upon us with the coming time change.
We start this period with Labor Day,
our Annual LOWA Meeting and Awards Presentations on September 2. The gaiety
continues with the soon-to-be Holiday Season. The Jewish New Year, Rosh
Hashanah, is early this year, coming next week, followed by Yom Kippur, the Day
of Atonement. Shortly after that we celebrate Halloween with witches and ghosts
for the youth of LOW. Veterans’ Day in November is a day of reflecting and
honoring of all those who have served in our Armed Forces in peace and war.
Then, before you know it, the sound of gobble, gobble is lessened and the sound
of families and friends getting together to party, share memories, and munch on
Tom Turkey is heard.
Wow, turn around and it’s Hanukah,
Kwanza, and Christmas, the most joyous time of the year.
Families/friends/neighbors gather to celebrate their beliefs, and hopefully include
those less fortunate than we are, and bow our heads to our respective Holy
rituals.
Before these events and ceremonies
take place, however, our excellent Programs Committee will have another
interesting and informative presenter. Our August speaker gave us a wonderful
presentation re: Dr. Theodore Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Suess. We laughed
and cried as memories came flooding back of the reading that we did for our
kids and grandkids. In September, Tom Joyce with the OC F&R, will educate us
on the subject of accidents in the home and their prevention.
Speaking about accidents in the home,
my brother lives in a multi-story home. Last week he fell down the steps and
was taken to the hospital. The doctor asked, “How many steps did you fall
down?” My brother replied, “I don’t know, I didn’t bother to count on my way
down.”

OC Fire and EMS ‘Has Our Backs’

We don’t anticipate a fire or medical emergency, but the Orange
County Fire and Emergency Medical Service personnel do. They are the ones who
respond to, approximately 5,500 emergency 911 calls each year.
Tom Joyce, Assistant Chief of Orange County’s Department of Fire
and EMS, will be the speaker at the AARP meeting on September 16. He has served
Orange County’s 34,000 residents for nine years, and has been in the fire and
rescue field for nearly 30. He’ll speak primarily on preventing fires and falls
for LOW’s residents, but we know his work has covered a myriad of unexpected
situations. We look forward to benefiting from that experience.
Come to the Clubhouse at 9:30 AM for coffee and sweets and the
opportunity to chat with old and new friends. The meeting begins at 10 PM.

September 19 Day of Service

Thursday, September
19, 2013, is our “Volunteer Service Day.” First, thanks to all of you who
volunteered over the past few years. You have made a big, positive impact on
our community; not to mention awards for our President and this club among
other Virginia AARP clubs!
Our goal is to
involve 10% of our membership as volunteers. Consider giving anywhere from two
to six hours of your life to help with the project.
As in the past, we
will have projects at:
* Dogwood Village (Orange County Nursing
Homes)—attend social activities, read to, write letters for, or just visit with
the residents).
* Orange
County Historical Society—some outside work.
* Orange County Humane Society
* Wilderness Food Pantry
* Wilderness Exhibition Shelter (clean up the
yard around the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) building yard, etc.)
I need someone to
coordinate each project. If you work with any organization, ask them what we
could do for them with a team of 4-10 people. Call me with the information.
I will have sign-up
sheets at the September 16 meeting. If you cannot make the meeting, let me know

Sulpher Springs, WV.2 nights lodging at the Greenbrier,

tour, access to the Casino Club, a culinary demonstration, on-site grounds transportation,

LOW.

Your Unwanted Treasures

Each month the AARP meeting conducts a silent
auction of unwanted articles donated by its members. But, we have cleaned
closets, and are running out of goodies. Can you help? Are you planning an
estate sale? Any small goodies left over?
New or gently used items include jewelry, small tools, linens, CD’s,
bric-a-brac, etc. You may phone me at 972-7866 for pick up this month until
Friday, September 13, or Mary Hudak at 972-8042. Our regular meetings are the
third meeting of the month, but contributions are welcome anytime that is
convenient for you.
All of the
funds raised are donated to local charities, such as the Wilderness Food Bank
and the Humane Society.

The
LOW Lions are sponsoring AARP’s Driver Safety Course for Senior Drivers on Oct.
31 and Nov. 1 from 9AM – 1PM in the Community Center in Lake of the Woods. The

Keeping
it safe

The safety of your food depends on many factors,
including how the food was grown, handled, processed, and stored. But shopping
strategies and how you handle the food at home are also important. Here’s how
to keep your groceries safe.
* If
food shopping is one of a number of errands, make it the last, especially if
you will be buying perishables and the weather is warm.
* Pay
attention to “sell by” and “use by” or other freshness dates on packaged
perishable products.
*
Pick up refrigerated and frozen foods last, so they are more likely to
stay cold until you get home.
* At
the checkout, bag refrigerated perishables together and raw meats separately.
Bag frozen foods separately, and put them in your car last, next to the
refrigerated perishables. They will keep each other cool, and they will be the
first things you take out of the car when you get home. In hot weather or, if
you have a long drive home, bring some insulated bags or a cooler with ice
packs to keep things chilled.

Get
Ready to Vote!

The Virginia General election is on Tuesday
November 5, 2013. It is time to get ready to vote! If you are already
registered to vote and have your voter registration card you do not need to
anything other than the card to vote, if not have a photo ID. You may either vote on Election Day (November
5, 2013) at your assigned polling place or by absentee ballot:
* Find
your polling place by going to www.sbe.virginia.gov
or by visiting or calling The Orange County Voter Registration at146 Madison
Rd. Suite 204, Orange, 540-672-5262
* Absentee
ballots may be by mail or in person at the Orange County Voter
Registration. Mail–in ballots must be
received at that office by 5:00PM on 29 October 2013. The website will tell you how to get an
absentee ballot. You may also vote in person at that same office no later than
31 October.
When you do vote you will need some form of voter
ID: your voter registration card, your
Virginia Driver’s license, a military ID, proof of residency. A complete list
of acceptable forms of ID and a host of other information on voting may can be
found at the web site.
This year you will have the opportunity to vote for
a new Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and a new delegate for the 30th
District.

donations of school supplies. There will be several boxes filled with essential
supplies for the primary, elementary, and middle school. We are giving the

Highlights of the
August Meeting

community; Sharon Webb, as co-editor for the newsletter; and to Joyce Bowers,
for coordination of the Election Day chicken dinner service line.

Election Day Chicken Barbecue – volunteer sign-up sheets will be
available at the next chapter meeting.
Tickets will be sent out with the September Perspectives.
* Bob
Johnson reminded members that Volunteer Day will be held September 19. Sign-up
sheets were available for various facilities. He will need a leader to help
with coordination at each site.
* A
shredder event is still in the planning stage for the fall.

Tours and Travel: Pierre Payette
reminded everyone of the upcoming trip to Greenbrier, December 3-5. Skip Poole stated that 23 people have signed
up for Fundraiser Cruise to Bermuda. He gave a check for $1000 to the Chapter
Treasurer. Kathi Marti announced final
payments are in for the WV “Ride the Rails” trip, October 7-9. She is still taking names for the “wait list.”

Tickets are still available for the New York Picnic to be held on
September 14. Tickets are $15 per

President Bradie once again reminded members not to give out personal
information solicited from phone calls.

50/50 was won by David Kovarik .
