President’s Letter
Ah, it’s June; sun bathing, swimming boating,
and the ever popular fishing. Where else but in Lake of the Woods can you walk
out and do all the above? Of course the rain doesn’t help promote a lot of
outdoor activity, but then we have our Community Center for Pickle Ball,
basketball etc, gathering places for schmoozing and nibbling like the Woods
Center Café. And of course every third Monday it’s the Chapter social hour
(really ½ hour) plus speakers, entertainment and stories re: my brother. (I do
have one, no kidding around.)
Our June get-together is a bit different than
the rest of the meetings. We have our picnic at Sweetbriar Park Pavilion. There
will be lots of communing with friends/ neighbors/ relatives without having to
listen to me yakking. It’s a time to enjoy “Grandma food” and some “Grandpa
food” prepared by our members who have many years of perfecting their
cuisine. In the past when we have had a
guest to speak or sing, etc., the noise of conversation was drowning out the
guest. Thus, last year and this year we have each other as entertainer, to be
able to converse with our peers and enjoy each other.
The Chefs who cook up our hot dogs and
hamburgers are experienced world travelers who can cook the items to
perfection.
Let’s all come out and have a rousing good
time of camaraderie and culinary delight. Speaking of picnics, my brother is a
guy who thinks he is always right. He and his wife were driving along the
highway a while back looking for a place to stop and have a picnic. His wife
said, “Let’s stop here and picnic under that tree.” My brother replied, “No,
let’s have it here in the middle of the road.” They argued, my brother won and
they set up in the middle of the road. All of a sudden a car came speeding
towards them and had to swerve into the tree to avoid hitting them. “See,” my
brother said, “If we were under that tree, we’d be dead now!”
See you on 17 June at our Chapter Picnic, away
from any highways.

June
17 Meeting—Chapter Picnic
by Charlotte Baker, Publicity
Our AARP Chapter will hold its annual picnic
on Monday, June 17, rain or shine, at the Lion George Lewis Pavilion in
Sweetbriar Park. This popular event will start at 11:30 AM.
Hamburgers, hot dogs, beverages, paper
goods, and utensils will be provided by AARP. Members are requested to bring
their favorite potluck dishes: casseroles, salads or desserts by 11:15 AM to
allow for set up time. This is a very special event for all to enjoy. You will
be meeting and greeting old friends and new ones too. This would be a good time
to bring a guest who is eligible to join the chapter.

NOTES, BITS AND PIECES
HELP! HELP! DRIVERS NEEDED
Woods Cares has a need
for 12 drivers a week to take two different individuals to the Culpeper
Dialysis Center. People on dialysis have to go three times a week, possibly for
the rest of their life.
These two people go
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Since the sessions are about four hours long,
we ask that you only drive one way. That is why we need up to 12 people a week.
Even if you can only drive once in a while, it would be a great help and you
can usually choose which day and time you want.
The patients have
appointment times between
11 AM and Noon and return the time is around 4 PM.
The woman lives outside LOW about one mile from the Locust Grove Town Center on
Route 20, and the man lives in LOW. Please contact Jeanette Embrey at 972-0726
to transport the woman or Marion Jacobeen at 972-4085 to transport the man.
Thank you for any help you can give.
AARP Silent Auction:
We are now open for business. Bring your
items and shop. Thank you for all your contributions.
Contact Mary Hudak at 972-8042 or Karen Kovarik at
972-7866 to arrange pick up. While we welcome contributions at the meeting,
those given in advance help us with pricing.
There will be no Auction at the June Picnic.
Sleepy Driving is Dangerous
by Sandie Frame
Don’t drive if you are sleep-deprived. About
four-percent of drivers say they have fallen asleep behind the wheel during the
past month, and 11-percent during the past year according to a recent report
from CDC. Previous research has estimated that drowsy driving is a factor in at
least 15 percent of all fatal traffic crashes. Even when sleepy drivers manage
to stay awake, drowsiness slows reaction time, reduces attentiveness, and
impairs decision making skills and judgment. Drowsy driver crashes, which most
commonly occur at night and during mid afternoon, are more likely to result in
serious injuries and fatalities than other crashes. If you find yourself
nodding off behind the wheel, and there is another driver in the car, give up
the wheel. If you are
alone,
pull over and walk around the area for a while. If possible, find a rest stop
or area where you can take a quick nap.

Legislative News
by Toni Quattromani
Not much to report on this month. The AARP
and many of the veteran’s organizations and unions have come out loudly against
the Chained CPI idea. Can’t say it is a dead idea but we will just have to wait
and see.
In researching the Affordable Care Act, I found a
web site that seems to be helpful to everyone. For those of you who do not have
access to the internet, you might team up with others that do. You may also use
the computers at the library.
The
web site, provided by the government www.healthcare.gov, provides a wealth of
information and is a site you may want to visit on regular basis. The site has
5 main sections, each of which present a lot of useful information:
Y Find Insurance Options Now
Y Prepare for the Health
Insurance Marketplace
Y Health Insurance Basics
Y The Health Care Law and You
Y Prevention, Wellness and
Comparing Providers
NOTICES:
From the Refreshments Committee: The Coffee man is
coming.
By Bob Johnson
You may have noticed the wonderful coffee AARP provides at our meetings.
Well, it is difficult to estimate how much coffee to make. I surely know it
will not be good for my health to run out, but I hate to pour the excess down
the drain. Why don’t some of you bring those wonderful travel mugs you have around
and after the meeting, drain the excess coffee into your mug and take it home.
It will make it easier for the Refreshments Committee and help me be less
grumpy at wasting good coffee! Just do it
AFTER the meeting. Thanks!

Highlights of the May 20, 2013 Meeting

Our
May speaker, Ms Mary Lou. Hollingshead, discussed an extensive problem in
America: the problem of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). SCA is a condition that
occurs when the heart stops pumping blood. It is usually caused by an electrical problem in the heart
" Presiden Dick Bradie gave awards to Nell
Meadow (Triad), Janet & Sherman Embry (Woods Cares), and Sara Wharton who sets
up and takes down the chairs, which is a big load off member’s backs!
" Dick
reminded everyone about the June 17th picnic. Bob Johnson asked for
some good dishes for the potluck part.
" Dick
warned against the most recent fraud: someone calls with all of your
information—name, phone number, Social Security Number and your credit card
number. Then they ask you for the 3- or 4-digit security number. NEVER GIVE OUT
ANY INFORMAATION TO SOMEONE WHO CALLS YOU.
" Carla
announced we had four new members.
